- Updated game and DLC content
The Pokemon franchise was released in 1996 and since then we’ve received tons of major games. In addition to at least one game per generation, there are also several spin-off games. All Pokemon games are available, so I wonder how many Pokemon games there are.
Here we will answer that. But usually the answer is many. It is classified as main story, spin-off, remake, etc. Thankfully, Pokemon are defined by generation, so putting the games in time is pretty easy. Now let’s take a look at every major Pokemon game in the franchise.
mainline pokemon games
Two major Pokémon games are released in each generation. These are closely related, so you don’t need to play both. Counting the duo games as one item, there are 16 games in the series. On the other hand, if you count the total number of games, the count jumps to 32.
Below you can check out all the major Pokemon games along with their related generations.
Updated game and DLC content
The video game industry has evolved considerably. If a developer wants to add more to the video game, they’ll probably get an update. This will be in the form of patches or paid DLC.
This isn’t always the case, as there are several earlier Pokemon games that received this new content in the form of a new third game.
You can check out all the third games and additional content below. Determine if the content is a separate game or DLC.
game |
Pairing Target (Mainline Game) |

There are 6 games total here, but if you count Ultra Sun and Moon as two separate games, you get 7.
remakes and sequels
Several Pokémon games have been remade since 1996. Additionally, the franchise has one direct sequel. You can check out each remake and sequel of Pokemon below.
The total number of remakes and sequels is 6. Again, if you count each physical game, you get 12.
spin-off pokemon games
Finally, we’ll cover spin-off games from the Pokemon franchise. This game cannot be included in a series. A lot overall.

sum
That was a lot of games! If so, what is the total? This total includes all individual games released. For example, Pokemon Red and Blue count as two games instead of one based on generational release.
With that in mind, there are a whopping 153 Pokemon games! It’s important to keep in mind that not all games are playable, but these are still pretty impressive numbers. Many of the games have been lost or ended over time, but there are still 153 titles and more to come.
