Who Didn’t Survive March Of The Machine In MTG?

The March Of The Machine set of Magic: The Gathering concludes the second Phyrexian Invasion arc. The set saw New Phyrexia infiltrating all the Planes of the Multiverse with their Realmbreaker, a tree capable of opening pathways between them.

RELATED: Magic The Gathering: Who Are The Phyrexians?

The Phyrexians caused many casualties throughout the Multiverse. Some were compleated and became a part of the Phyrexian forces while others died during the war. While New Phyrexia ultimately lost the war and was phased out of the Multiverse (changing places with Zhalfir), there were many characters that did not survive the invasion. After New Phyrexia was phased out, Glistening Oil ceased functioning, causing the compleated to crumble to the ground and “turn off.”

Compleated

A Phyrexian Ayara from TMG
Ayara, Furnace Queen by Anna Podedworna

Queen Ayara: Ayara was the queen of Locthwain on the Plane of Eldraine. She was incredibly old and thought to be immortal. She met with Chulane briefly before the Phyrexian Invasion began, who felt Eldraine was at risk of an unknown force. Chulane’s warnings weren’t enough, and Ayara, along with all of Locthwain was compleated.

Dean Shaile: Shaile was an owlin and one of the two deans of Strixhaven’s Silverquill. She was optimistic and preached the importance of doing good and making the world a better place for everyone. She was compleated and attacked the students of Strixhaven while looking for the other Silverquill dean Embrose Lu. Embrose fought her off to allow the students to activate the Invocation of the Founders to hold off the Phyrexian forces.

Dean Nassari: An efreet shaman, Nassari was once someone who thrived off of making spectacles out of performances. One of the two Prismari deans, she wanted her students to treat the world as a canvas and wanted them to perform from the heart. She was very grandiose in her actions and wanted her students to follow her lead. She was compleated along with many other teachers and attacked Rootha while the students tried to perform the Invocation of the Founders, though failed to stop the students when Quintorius took control of Rootha’s part of it.

Moira: Moira was a necromancer from Dominaria, who accidentally destroyed herself when a spell backfired and became a spirit. Before this, she bound spirits to herself and made them do her bidding. After becoming a spirit, she instead helped them to get used to the afterlife. She was compleated through unknown means and partnered herself with fellow compleated Dominarian Teshar.

Teshar: Teshar was a member of the Order Of The Ancestor, a religious group that believed the angel Serra and the diety The Ancestor that created all life in the Otaria region were the same. The aven sought to spread the word of Serra, but Teshar was compleated and allied with the now-Phyrexian Moira during the Phyrexian Invasion.

Rona: Rona was a human from Dominaria that became obsessed with the ancient Phyrexia and Gix (a Praetor from the Yawgmoth era of Phyrexia). She discovered the body of Sheoldred in the Caves Of Koilos during an infiltration before New Phyrexia invaded every Plane. She repaired Sheoldred and assisted her in attacking Dominaria. Rona tried to lead an assault on Urza’s Tower where the Planeswalkers were working on a plan to take care of the Phyrexian threat but was injured and taken to New Phyrexia. Afterwards, she helped lead the second wave of Phyrexians on Dominaria and was compleated as a reward, something she had been seeking since her obsession began.

Kaldheim warriors fighting compleated toski and sarulf
Invasion of Kaldheim by Bryan Sola

Toski: Toski was the messenger for the God of the World Tree Esika, delivering messages between the realms of Kaldheim. Toski was unable to speak and communicated with telepathy with Esika so that the secrets he’s given aren’t able to be taken out of him. The squirrel was compleated during the Phyrexian attack on Kaldheim.

Sarulf: Sarulf was a giant wolf that caused destruction across the many realms of Kaldheim. With the help of the Gods, dwarves were able to capture him and he was bound to a cavern. His howling became intolerable and the dwarves forced the Gods to move him elsewhere. However, he escaped while being transported, and was later compleated by the Phyrexians.

Omnath: Omnath was an elemental being of pure mana that manifested from Zendikar. Omnath was imprisoned by a ritual known as the Ritual Of Lights, but during the Eldrazi’s return it was interrupted and Omnath was set loose on Zendikar. It started out with just green mana, and slowly gained more colors of it, the last being black, which it obtained after being compleated.

Phyrexian vampire drinking Phyrexian blood
Ichor Drinker by Aurore Folny

Anhelo: Anhelo was the head of the Maestros on New Capenna after the death of Xander. Despite being an assassin, he considered himself an artist, adding his own creative spins on the “art.” He along with most of the Maestros were compleated when Atraxa came to New Capenna. He tried to stop his daughter Errant from setting explosives to kill Atraxa and tried to convince her to join him. He failed in this and Errant was successful in her plan.

Polukranos: The hydra was locked away underneath the Nessian Forest by the Gods of Theros. He remained imprisoned there until Elspeth Tirel was ordered to slay it by the God Heliod. She succeeded and Polukranos was banished to the Underworld. However, while the Gods fought each other, Polurkanos was able to escape and continue to feast on the world. He was compleated once the Phyrexians invaded Theros.

Brimaz: The leonin was once the king of the Oreskos, one that his fellow leonin looked up to. He was a strong warrior and powerful leader but was compleated along with much of Theros.

Erebos: Erebos was the God of the Underworld and Death on Theros. He was responsible for freeing Elspeth from the Underworld after she defeated Heliod. Erebros entrapped Heliod under a giant boulder for all eternity. In his feud with Heliod, he allowed many Underworld denizens to escape. He was compleated after the residents of Theroes were compleated and their beliefs fell under Phyrexian influence, causing the same to happen to the Gods they worshipped.

Thassa: The God of the Sea, Thassa was patient but if her anger rose too much she would unleash devastating fury. She was compleated along with the rest of the mono-color aligned Gods.

Nylea: Nylea was the God of the Hunt, and was more playful than most previous Gods. However, she was very protective of nature and the animals, working to prevent humans from entering certain places. She was compleated due to her followers’ own compleation.

Purphoros: Once God of the Forge, Purphoros was easily frustrated and a perfectionist. He channelled his emotions into his forge where he created many artifacts. He was compleated during the Phyrexian Invasion of Theros.

Deceased

Atraxa's death after being impaled
Atraxa’s Fall by Xavier Ribeiro

Atraxa: Atraxa was once an angel from Mirrodin that helped fellow Mirrans flee from the Phyrexians. She was captured and compleated in a ceremony attended by all the Praetors but Urabarsk, who refused in a show of unity. It was the mark of New Phyrexia successfully taking over Mirrodin. She was dispatched to New Capenna and ordered by Elesh Norn to destroy everyone and everything there. Since she was previously an angel, Elesh Norn believed this would help make her more resistant to Halo, which previously held back a Phyrexian invasion there. However, she would be lured into a trap where they dropped all of Park Heights onto her, killing her.

Vorinclex: Vorinclex was the green-aligned Praetor of New Phyrexia. He was sent to Kaldheim to receive tyrite – sap from the World Tree that would eventually grow to be the Realmbreaker. Once Zhalfir began to switch places with New Phyrexia and the Zhalfir forces began the counter-attack, Vorinclex tried to attack Teferi, who was helping slow Phyrexians down to assist the Zhalfir warriors. He was struck down and killed by one of them while focusing too much on Teferi and not his surroundings.

Sheoldred: The black Praetor, Sheoldred was the strongest of the Seven Steel Thanes. She was sent to Dominaria where she converted many residents into sleeper agents for Phyrexia. She was responsible for capturing Karn – the creator of Mirrodin (which became New Phyrexia) and taking him back to New Phyrexia with her. She turned on Elesh Norn and allied herself with Urabrask and his rebellion, but was captured by the compleated Planeswalkers and executed by Ajani Goldmane by order of Elesh Norn.

Jin-Gitaxias: Jin-Gitaxias was the blue Praetor, and the one who discovered how to compleat Planeswalkers. He infiltrated Kamigawa, where he experimented on the kami there to learn how, and was responsible for the compleation of Tamiyo, who became the first Phyrexian Planeswalker. He upgraded the Glistening Oil (what turns beings into Phyrexians) to be much more effective, no longer needing a long process to have someone undergo compleation. Jin-Gitaxias turned on Elesh Norn, believing her to be a weak leader. However, he was struck down and fell into a vat of Phyrexian newts that ate him alive.

Karn unmaking elesh norn
Mirrodin Avenged by Scott Murphy

Elesh Norn: Elesh Norn was the leader of the Machine Orthodoxy and self-proclaimed Mother Of Machines. She was the white Praetor who sought to indoctrinate all into Phyrexia. After Phyrexia conquered Mirrodin, Elesh Norn sought to spread Phyrexia all throughout the Multiverse. She was able to manipulate her fellow Praetors for her plans, sending them to the various Planes of the Multiverse to gather sources needed for the Phyrexian invasion. Elesh Norn was injured by Elspeth, now an archangel as other Praetors started to turn on her. She was destroyed by Karn, who broke his vow of pacifism by using his powers over artifacts to unmake her entirely.

Koma: Koma was the first of the Cosmos monsters, who were born from the World Tree. The serpent was giant, and continuously growing. He was compleated during the Phyrexian Invasion and later killed by Fynn, the only person previously able to injure Koma.

Algenus and Linden Kenrith: The Kenrith family were the ruling family of Eldraine. Algenus Kenrith was the High King of the Realm – the five courts of Eldraine who were meant to maintain please and keep the Wilds of Eldraine in check. During the Phyrexian invasion, they both avoided compleation, but were both killed during the events as all the courts fell.

Heliod: Once the God of the Sun on Theros, Heliod was prideful to a fault. He was largely responsible for the in-fighting between the Gods and sought to become the sole God. He was defeated and as punishment forced to spend eternity holding a boulder over his head. However, he was at some point freed and compleated after his followers were. The Planeswalker Kaya helped those on Theros who were not yet compleated, and Heliod was ultimately killed by her.

Vivian striking Lukka in Vadrok's mouth in Magic The Gathering.
Tandem Takedown by Yigit Koroglu

Lukka: Lukka was once a member of the Coppercoats on Ikoria. He had special powers that made him a bonder, which allowed him to control animals. However, this made him an outcast, and he was banished from his home of Drannith. He attempted to lead an army of monsters to attack Drannith but failed and caused his spark to ignite. Lukka was recruited by the Gatewatch to travel to New Phyerxia with a strike team where he was compleated after bonding with a Phyrexian.

He returned to Ikoria after the Phyrexian invasion began, where he destroyed Drannith and attempted to compleat the survivors. However, the dragon Vadrok defeated him, and he was killed by both him and Viven Reed. Vadrok even lit his corpse on fire with his flames – which were capable of erasing the very memory of those engulfed in it from everyone’s minds.

Etali: Etali was one of the elder dinosaurs from Ixalan. There was an elder for each part of magic the land hand, an Etali was the manifestation of the unending storm. He was the only elder dinosaur compleated, and the rest came to defend Ixalan from the converted Etali. He was ultimately killed by the three-headed dinosaur Zacama.

Melira: Melira was a Mirran woman who was born without metal in her body. This made her immune to glistening oil, and she was a healer who was able to prevent it from taking others over. Due to the improvement over glistening oil, her ability to counteract it for others was weakened later on. She assisted the Mirran Resistance all the way up to her death.

Melira was severely injured while the plan to get Wrenn to the Realmbreaker was going on. She was able to hold on until the war was won, and offered her life to heal the compleated Planeswalkers Ajani Goldmane and Nissa Revane. Using the last of her life force, she was able to undo the compleation and died after the process was completed.

Alive But Changed

Teferi planting Wrenn in Magic The Gathering.
Seed Of Hope by Gaboleps

Wrenn: Wrenn was a dryad Planeswalker who bound her body with trees that allowed her to move around. She met Teferi on Innistrad, befriending him after helping her to find a new tree, which she needed once she unbounded herself with Six. Wrenn promised to help Teferi bring Zhalfir back into the Multiverse. Teferi brought her in to fight against the Phyrexians, and She later helped Chandra Nalaar lead an assault on New Phyrexia after the previous strike team failed.

Wrenn made it to the Realmbreaker and bonded with it, nurturing the seed of the World Tree inside to make it into Eight. She used all of her life force to bring Zhalfir back into the Multiverse along with Teferi, and she sent New Phyerxia back in its place. Though this killed her form, an acorn remnant remained. Teferi grabbed this, knowing it was a seed that would grow Wrenn back, and planted it on Zhalfir once the Phyrexian invasion was stopped.

Karn: The creator of Mirrodin and the one (accidentally) responsible for New Phyrexia, Karn was a golem created by Urza. He suffered his own Phyrexian corruption that was healed by the sacrifice of the Planeswalker Venser, who gave up his spark and life to heal Karn. Once the war against New Phyrexia was won, Karn worked with Melira to heal Ajani and Nissa. He gave up Venser’s spark within them to cleanse the corrupted sparks of the two. While they were healed, this came at the cost of Melira’s life and Karn’s spark, no longer a Planeswalker anymore.

Urabrask: The red-aligned Praetor, Urabrask was the one that cared the most about individuality. He fundamentally disagreed with the philosophies of all the other Praetors and was actively working against them. He allowed the Mirran Resistance to make camp in his domain of the Quiet Furnace. He went to New Capenna to study Halo – a substance that the Phyrexians were weak to and to tell the Gatewatch about the resistance and Elesh Norn’s fear of Elspeth.

Urabrask was later captured and had his limbs removed, with Elesh Norn telling those who did it to “leave the traitor be.” Urabrask remained on New Phyrexia as it was phased out, and is unknown if he succumbed to his wounds.

Tamiyo: Tamiyo was a Moonfolk Planeswalker from Kamigawa. She collected stories from across the Multiverse, sharing them with her family and fellow Planeswalkers Narset and Ajani. Tamiyo was compleated after she was kidnapped by the Planeswalker Tezzeret who was working with Phyrexia. She was responsible for the compleation of Ajani and conversion into a sleeper agent after luring him into a trap. She returned to Kamigawa for the first time since her compleation once the Phyerxian invasion began, where she was killed by the Wanderer.

However, Tamiyo had put her memory into a scroll that would activate in the case of her death. Though Tamiyo was slain, she lives on as a spirit with the memories of her free from Phyrexian influence. She returned with her adopted son Nashi to their home at the end of the Phyerxian invasion.
