Because The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule is so expansive, you’ll need a horse companion to take you from one place to another just in time. You will also encounter various enemies on horseback. So you might even want to try riding the playground yourself.
Horse stats are only visible when you register them in a stable, but solid and special horses found in side quests have higher stats than spotted horses. All horses have three stats (strength, speed and stamina) that determine their quality. Stronger horses have more HP, speed allows them to cover distances faster, and stamina refers to how many gallops the horse can do before it recovers.
Epona is a great horse. She’s limited behind the Amiibo, so she won’t be included here.
6 Monochrome Horse – 4 Strength, 3 Speed, 4 Stamina
If you’re looking for a horse that’s more versatile than one that excels in certain stats, you can’t go wrong choosing this horse. It’s not the best solid color horse, but it stands a mile above the spotted horse variants.
The Strength and Stamina stats are nothing to scoff at at 4 each, so you can travel Hyrule without fear of being knocked out by monsters. It has low speed, but the extra stamina allows it to sprint across the ground.
5 Monochrome Horse – 2 Strength, 5 Speed, 3 Stamina
Traversing Hyrule on foot sometimes doesn’t cut it when you need to get to places quickly where using a fast horse helps. This horse has the fastest speed stat in the game and boasts a staggering 5 speeds. Fast movement is especially useful when traveling long distances or when you need to quickly run away from swarms of enemies.
Its stellar Speed stat comes at a price, as its Strength stat is purely a 2. In other words, this horse has very low HP compared to other horses, so you must avoid getting attacked by enemies. However, since you can easily sprint out of trouble, you are unlikely to take many hits in the first place.
4 Monochrome Horse – 5 Strength, 3 Speed, 5 Stamina
This solid horse has excellent strength and stamina ratings, both scoring impressive 5s. A high level of strength and speed combined will allow you to gallop through Hyrule without having to worry about visiting the horse god thanks to a decent amount of HP.
This horse is especially useful when taking on enemies on horseback, as it can easily handle a few arrows while dealing with surrounding monsters. The only thing that disappoints this horse is its low speed stat of 3, but it’s a great horse companion if you don’t mind taking scenic routes.
three Monochrome Horse – 4 Strength, 4 Speed, 5 Stamina
If you’re looking for a well-balanced horse that will be reliable, this is your pick. It has near-perfect stats across the board, including its stamina rating being the highest in the game. Other horses may excel in certain areas and be weak in others, but this horse has no flaws.
These horses can be trusted in a variety of situations, whether galloping through the vast landscapes of Hyrule or fighting behind horses. With this horse by my side, I won’t be visiting Malanya anytime soon.
2 Giant Horse – 5 Strength, 2 Speed, Stamina N/A
This mighty stallion towers over all other horses in Hyrule. The design is also impressive, with a jet-black coat and bright orange mane reminiscent of Ganondorf’s horse from Ocarina of Time.
Giant horses are found in Taobab Grasslands and can be difficult to tame. You’ll want to make sure you have enough stamina to hold this giant horse yourself. It also requires riding past two Lynels to register at the stable, but it’s worth it for the sheer power it boasts. Unlike all other horses in the game, which all have an attack rating of 5, Giant Horse has an amazing attack rating of 10. The rather slow but great progress in return means this isn’t a big deal.
One Royal White Stallion – Strength 4, Speed 3, Stamina 5
As the name suggests, the Royal White Stallion is a horse fit for royalty. In fact, it appears to be a descendant of Princess Zelda’s horse, seen in various memories throughout the game.
Royal White Stallion is the subject of a side quest of the same name. When Link talks to Toffa at the Outskirt Stable, he mentions that a white horse was sighted on Safula Hill. Toffa wants to see a white horse because of its pedigree. It is worth completing Toffa’s request and taming the Royal White Stallion. A high stamina rating of 5 means that you can sprint for long distances. Toffa offers a free Royal Bridle and Saddle when you show your horse.
