The Great Hammers of the Elden Ring have received several significant buffs since launch, with increased speed, range, and recovery time. The general consensus among the community is that these changes make what was previously considered a lesser weapon class far more enjoyable to use. Because few things bring more joy than going through the land between with a particularly heavy stick. .
If you’ve dodged the Great Hammer in the past, now is the perfect time to try out this powerful weapon. And this list is here to tell you which of them is the right choice for you.
10 great club
The Great Club is the longest Great Hammer that can grant the unique Ashes of War. You’ll sacrifice a fair amount of damage compared to other options when using it, but that extra range can be useful.
This weapon also has the advantage of being obtained early in the game. You don’t even have to fight a single enemy to get it (assuming you skip the tutorial). The Great Club is the Forlorn Hound sitting on a cliff south of Evergaol and guarded by a few Ajin.
9 Curved Great Club
Curved Great Club is best in class for certain preferences (specifically Magic, Flame and Sacred). As a result, if you want Greathammer for an Intelligence or Faith build, this would be your best bet. And who doesn’t want to torment people with magic?
Many second-generation Albinaurics carry this weapon around Liurnia of the Lakes and can farm it with relative ease. These Albinaurics are very common, especially in the Temple Quarter.
8 Rotten Battle Hammer
The Rotten Battle Hammer is tied with the shortest Great Hammer for overpowering damage, but one particular attribute makes it on this list. One of a very limited number of weapons that can trigger a Scarlet Rot. In general, you want your status-triggering weapon to be fast, but it’s a bit less relevant with the Scarlet Rot. This is because it can only be triggered once before having to wait for it to wear out.
Unfortunately, like most Scarlet Rot weapons, the Rotten Battle Hammer isn’t obtainable until later in the game. It’s in Sacred Winters, where it’s sure to drop from Rotten Duelists, which can be found west of Sacred Winters’ Place of Grace.
7 great mace
The Great Mace is a solid all-around weapon. It can grant a variety of Ashes of War, competing on both damage and length among Great Hammers that share its properties. Shorter than a great club and weaker than a brick hammer, it’s not the best in either category, but the combinations offered by the great mace may feel better than the more extreme alternatives.
Weapons can be obtained mid-game in the area leading to the Grand Rift of Dectus. It’s in a crate nestled in the middle of a catapult trying to shoot you down en route to the lift.
6 brick hammer
If you’ve been drawn to the great hammer for the simple desire to inflict trauma with a blunt force, then the brick hammer is the weapon for you. It’s a brick on a stick and works like a brick. It deals best-in-class damage at various affinities, especially Heavy, and gains S scaling. That said, it’s one of the shortest greathammers out there and can cause problems against more mobile opponents.
But even if you don’t want to use it for the entire playthrough, Brick Hammer can be found early in the game in Stormveil Castle by going through the rafters where Gatekeeper Gostoc will try to trap and kill you. This makes it a solid option for Strength builds in the early stages of Elden Ring.
5 cranial vessel candlestick
The most flashy aspect of Cranial Vessel Candlestand is its weapon skill, Surge of Faith. Activate to thrust your weapon into the air, launching a fireball in a wide area around you. This ability isn’t particularly effective against small enemies since where the fireballs fall is relatively random, but if the enemy is large (especially if you can get under them), Surge of Faith will do massive damage.
And unlike some weapons that have impressive weapon skills, the Cranial Vessel Candlestand has good strength and faith scaling, so just swinging it at an enemy will do quite a bit of damage. However, you won’t be able to get this weapon until late in the game. Locked behind the seal of an imp statue in the giant conquer hero’s tomb at the top of Giant’s Mountain.
4 pick
Despite literally having the word ‘axe’ in its name and using a greataxe moveset, the pickaxe is actually a greathammer. And it’s also unique in another important respect. Unlike all other weapons in their class, most heavy weapons generally do piercing damage. It may sound like a small difference, but in practice it can be quite significant. Stab Weapons deal counter damage when attacking when an opponent attacks, and Spear Talismans increase the damage by 15%, allowing you to deal a lethal blow if you grab an enemy during an attack animation.
Giving this property to a weapon that is already a powerful weapon makes the pickaxe a real threat in the right circumstances. It can be farmed from miners who can be found in the many mines dotted across the lands of Sai. The oldest mine is the Rimgrave Tunnel.
three Beastclaw Greatmaul
Of all the weapons on this list, the Beastclaw Greathammer might be the one that benefited the most from the patch changes. Regal Beastclaw, a weapon skill, got a significant damage boost, and overall changes to the Great Hammer class made the Beastclaw Greathammer a true combo in PvP (from uncharged one-handed heavy to light attacks).
However, you will have to work hard to get this weapon. Bestial Sanctum as a reward for giving you Gurranq 7 Deathroot. But the changes made to Beastclaw Greathammer mean it’s really worth the trouble.
2 envoy’s long horn
Given its… unusual shape, you wouldn’t expect the Envoy’s long horns to be a powerhouse, but it is what it is. Like any instrument, it takes considerable damage when wielded, but the Longhorn is best when played. The weapon skill, Bubble Shower, is top-notch in PvE games. A sort of continuous shotgun effect, causing small bubbles to spread widely. It’s a bit tricky to use against smaller enemies, but will shred big bosses. This is especially true when wearing the Envoy’s Crown, which increases damage by 15%.
To give you some context on how powerful this can be, Bubble Shower quickly reduces even an Elden Beast’s health to 0, making that boss 80% resistant to Holy damage. If you want that kind of damage, the Large Oracle Envoys you meet at Haligtree in Leyndell, Royal Capital, and Miquella will drop the Envoy’s Longhorn.
One great star
As the only Great Hammer with innate blood accumulation, Great Stars were our pick to make this list. But that’s not the weapon’s only feature. He also regenerates health whenever he attacks an enemy. The healing numbers aren’t huge on a hit basis, but add up quickly. This is especially true when using Ash of War, which allows you to attack faster than you can normally do with a great hammer.
Also, previously you could only get one Great Stars per run of the game, but in a later patch you could get two before entering New Game Plus. The original is being towed by a wagon near the Iniquity Site of Grace on the Altus Plateau, the new one is nearby and drops after killing Magnus the Beast Claw, which can be encountered in the Writheblood Ruins during White Mask Varré’s questline.
