- Yes it’s dangerous to go alone, take this
The world is bigger, brighter, and full of endless discoveries than you ever imagined. With discovery comes doubt. There’s the excitement of not knowing where the next step will take you, but also the gnawing fear. You hand something to you and say, “It’s dangerous to go alone! take this.”
If you could say a more iconic quote from The Legend of Zelda series, let alone the first game, it probably deserves an award. If you’ve seen this line on the internet but aren’t sure where it came from, don’t worry. We’re here to help. After all, it’s dangerous to go alone… Take this guide with you.
What’s a dangerous game if you go alone? Do you bring this?
Everyone has probably heard of The Legend of Zelda series. As a controller, it’s as ubiquitous as a symbol in video games. The first entry, simply titled The Legend of Zelda, was released on the NES in 1986 and was unlike anything anyone had played before. As a game about exploration, the original Zelda doesn’t give you much guidance on where to go or what to do. You are just a small person in a big, hostile world.
Story-wise, The Legend of Zelda is about rescuing the eponymous Princess Zelda and fighting Ganon, the King of Darkness. For this first item, there isn’t much else to do. There are dungeons to crawl, octopuses to fight, and the Triforce of Wisdom to reassemble. This entry in the Zelda series has a lot of freedom and is cited as the main inspiration for Breath of the Wild’s open-ended playstyle and massive overworld. You don’t have to follow a specific path to your end goal.
When you enter the land of Hyrule in the original Zelda game, you are greeted with an empty space with a single cave and paths leading in all directions. Instinct will lead you to a cave, where you will meet an old man who utters iconic lines before disappearing into the ether. After that, you go out into the world. The man neither advises nor instructs. He just gives you the first sword and sends you on your way.
Yes it’s dangerous to go alone, take this
Whether it’s a picture of a cat or a link (ha), most uses of this meme rely on something hypothetically conveyed as mediocre at best and ineffective at worst. Here are some examples:
No phrase in the gaming lexicon is more iconic and versatile than “It’s dangerous to go alone”, and no phrase has the same reach. You can use anything, anywhere. It could be a warm message between friends, a little prank, or passing some legitimately useful information. And yet, like Zelda, it’s timeless.
